For more than a decade O&CO. has been proud to showcase olive oils from Château Virant. It's been a pleasure getting to know the Cheylan family, and to witness first hand the dedication of Christine Cheylan to each year’s harvest.
From a French countryside bearing olives and vines as early as 1632, Château Virant was acquired by Robert and Noële Cheylan in 1974. In 1996, following the emergence and success of Château Virant in the realm of wine marketing, Robert Cheylan decided to invest in the building of Château Virant’s very own olive oil mill, which would provide the Cheylan family complete oversight and control of the olive oil production process. During the harvest, the mill at Château Virant is open 24/7. The mill master, Christine, the daughter of Robert and Noële, is so busy she often forgets to sleep: she lifts boxes, handles the forklift, organizes tastings, welcomes customers and growers, and checks on the quality of the olives, always with a smile. She has emerged over the years as a benchmark in the national olive-growing scene, earning many awards, most recently 5 Gold and 4 Silver medals at the Concours General Agricole Paris (the CGA) in 2013. The CGA is the renowned French agricultural show funded and organized by the French ministries of agriculture, food, fisheries and rural affairs.
The Olive Grove
Château Virant is located in Aix-en-Provence. Enriched with clay and limestone, the soil is subject to high temperatures and much sunlight. The sun-drenched soil in this region of France promotes the development of both wine varieties such as Syrah, Grenach and Ugni Blanc, as well as unique varieties of olives.
The Cheylan family’s dedication to Château Virant and their terroir guarantees the reputation of its wines and olive oils.
Château Virant olive oil has been featured by O&CO. for over 10 years!
